"YOU CAN RECOVER" GROUP
Welcome to the "You Can Recover" Group page.
We meet on Tuesday nights, 7:30 - 9 pm, at All Saints Church. The address is 111 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick, RI 02886.
The group was formed by three members, Tom, Brendan, and Bobby, who meet the typical Group Conscience and continue to practice the principles to the best of their abilities while continuing to work with others, and the meeting is open and for men and women.
After attending and being a part of various BBSS meetings throughout Massachusetts the group was formed in Rhode Island. This will be what is believed to be the 7th BBSS meeting to start in Rhode Island. The first five have collapsed and the sixth is still trudging on.
The BBSS meetings, their format, and their group conscience have had a difficult time of it in RI. It would seem it is not as welcome here as it is in other areas.
While this group will respect the structure and format of the BBSS meetings our approach is from an entirely different angle. Looking at the directions in the Big Book as it relates to "Working With Others" there are a few things that are crystal clear. First, "love and tolerance is our code." Second, "...we were approached by those in whom the problem had been solved...," Third, "Get an idea of his behavior, his problems, his background, the seriousness of his condition, and his religious leanings. You need this information to put yourself in his place, to see how you would like him to approach you if the tables were turned." And lastly, "We began to see that the world and its people really dominated us. In that state, the wrong-doing of others, fancied or real, had power to actually kill."
It is partly for these reasons and mostly the past experience we have had with trying to begin and maintain other BBSS groups in Rhode Island that "You Can Recover" has deviated from the stringency of the typical BBSS Group Conscience. Easily translated the only difference will be that all are allowed to share at the meeting if they are an alcoholic. Those who have been through the process are asked to begin their "share" in the typical manner. Those who have not will need to stay on the reading. Those who do not will be redirected to the reading.
While some may argue that this is not a BBSS meeting we would beg to differ based on the founding members individual and collective experiences at the BBSS meetings. The intent and purpose of the group is the same and our effort with this difference will be not only to create the fellowship we crave in Rhode Island with an eye on future BBSS meetings but create a more welcoming meeting for those who wish to hear about a solution to their problems with the hope of being of service to them and to God.
The tabs below are offered as links that spell out the "Meeting Format" and "Group Conscience" that were adopted with the group's formation.
